Life in a metropolitan city often seems to be a double-edged sword. On one hand, one experiences the perks and luxuries of a technology-driven life whereas on the other hand stress and anxiety become inseparable lifestyle traits.
While it is hard to let go of the perks and the competition-driven spirit.. often our health takes a toll. A couple of years back I found myself in a similar botched work-life balance. I was almost always tired, easily irritable, agitated, and cold. Yes, cold! I'd always need an extra layer, be it while sitting in a restaurant during summer or taking a walk at night. I was never comfortable and didn't even feel hungry for long stretches. Honestly, I love running and long walks but back then I dreaded both.
Fortunately, my dermatologist was able to diagnose the situation before it went out of hand. On a casual visit to her regarding my face acne and redness, she asked me to get my Thyroid hormones checked. It came out I was experiencing Hypothyroidism and was anemic too. Something very common for females in their 20s.
I was not sure to start medicines right away, and waited to test the levels after three months. But, not much changed in those three months either, my TSH levels did come down but not enough to stop my physician from prescribing the meds. My Hb stood at 9!
But, I was adamant. I chose to wait for another 5 months. I changed everything. I no longer worked beyond my work hours. I ate 3 meals a day. Did pranayam and yoga and most importantly took a break from everything that I wasn't sure or happy about. I made sure to read and watch movies. ( as many as I could. )I even started walking and taking more steps than usual.
As of today, I am extremely happy to share that my TSH and Hb levels are normal. No Hypothyroidism or anemia :D
I'm sharing this so that, overworked people, too focused on building something realize it's important to judge your physical and mental capacities before you start something. You need both to achieve your goals. I intend to convey that more often than not we dedicate long hours to our professional tasks to get closer to our dreams but if only we allot those extra hours to our well-being, we'd probably relish the road to success. It might help us unravel the chaos, de-clutter, and achieve more than we dreamt of!!
"After all, if we can't commit to our tangible selves how will we be able to commit to our intangible dreams?”
